In depth

Planning event security guards for your event

How many event security guards your event needs depends on the posts it must fill, not a fixed ratio. Count every open entrance, the parking lot, the stage or bar area and any backstage or VIP door, then add roaming coverage for the crowd. Alcohol service, a late finish and overnight equipment usually push the number up; a ticketed, single-entry private party needs fewer officers. Before you request a quote, sketch the venue map and mark where guests queue, park and leave. Consultant site reviews are by phone or video by default, in person when the client wants it.

Most concerts, festivals and private parties work well with unarmed guards whose first tool is customer service: a calm greeting at the gate, clear directions and a firm, polite no for anyone not on the list. Guests remember how they were treated at the door, so brief officers on your dress code, guest-list rules and tone. Armed coverage is a separate decision for high-value sites or specific threats, and it changes cost and atmosphere. Typical ranges, not a quote: $40–$100+ an hour (armed) versus $35–$75 an hour (event). The cost guide shows how hours and officer count drive the total.

Post orders, the written instructions for each shift, decide what event security services actually do on the night, so write them before event week. Spell out which entrances open when, how vendors and deliveries come through, whether officers may run bag checks, and where lost property and medical calls go. For private parties at a home, list the rooms that stay off-limits and name the one person who can approve exceptions. Share a draft with your venue manager first. Plans change on event day. A security consultant is reachable around the clock for post-order changes, schedule changes or incidents.

Event-day rules

Rules that shape staffing.

Crowds

In Los Angeles County, the Fire Department requires trained crowd managers at events where more than 1,000 people gather: at least one crowd manager for every 250 people.

Uniforms

State law: guards shall wear a patch on each shoulder of his or her uniform that reads “private security” and that includes the name of the private patrol company.

Homes

For a private party at a home or estate, the post orders should say which rooms officers may enter. Without consent, California generally bars a licensee's staff from private areas that aren't open to the public.

Training

The thirty-two (32) hours of training in security officer skills must be completed within the first six (6) months of registration. Compare provider training claims against it.

Licensing

A security guard or security officer, within the meaning of this chapter, is an employee of a private patrol operator. Check its license.

Credentials

A security guard must possess a valid and current security guard registration card on his or her person while on-duty. Check.
